AC/DC:
T.N.T. Australia. Festival/Mushroom/Albert & Sons. Re-mastered reissue of the Oz rocker's second Australian album, originally released in 1975. Confusingly, the tracks here served as the basis for their international debut, 'High Voltage', although that album shared the same title with the band's Aussie debut!. This edition remains uniquely Australian with the tracks "The Rocker' (later re-recorded for 'Dirty Deeds Done Dirt Cheap') and a cover of Chuck Berry's "School Days" and the album's original cover art. You might already be familiar with most of the tracks, but this is the way the band had originally intended these songs to be heard. $25

APPLES IN STEREO:
New Magnetic Wonder. U.S. Yep Roc Records. Deluxe enhanced 24 track digi-pak edition. When the Elephant 6 collective first began putting out records in the mid-1990s, teen angst and raw grunge pop dominated the airwaves, making the E6's baroque psychedelia a whimsical reference to a bygone age. Since then, neo-psych has become the chief aesthetic of much of indie culture: from the orchestral ambitions of Sufjan Stevens to the brown acid bombast of Comets on Fire. In this milieu, the Apples in Stereo, perhaps the most definitive E6 band of the collective's heyday, return with a whopper, the epic, 24-track 'NEW MAGNETIC WONDER', and a lesson for the droners in what a psych revival can be.

MICKEY BAKER:
Rock With A Sock, Special Guests: Mickey & Sylvia. Germany. Bear Family. 28 tracks recorded between 1952 and 1957 for Savoy, Rainbow, MGM, Groove, Vik and RCA Victor. Though forever best known to casual fans as half of Mickey and Sylvia, whose 1957 single "Love Is Strange" was one of the decade's most peculiar and bewitching sides, McHouston "Mickey" Baker has spent decades on the bar and theatre circuit as one of the most original and distinctive guitarists in R&B. His enormous musical gifts are readily apparent on this release. The tracks run an amazing stylistic gamut, from the Latin-flavored instrumental "Guitar Mambo" through the gospel-tinged "Oh Happy Day" to the smoking gutbucket solos that pepper bluesy tunes like "Old Devil Moon" and "You'd Better Heed My Warning." His vocals, as on the standard "Where Is My Honey" have lost none of their casual charm, either. $22

BLACK SABBATH:
Symptom Of The Universe. U.S. Warner Bros./Rhino. More than 25 years after the release of 'We Sold Our Soul For Rock 'n' Roll', that excellent Black Sabbath collection is finally eclipsed by 'Symptom Of The Universe', a two-disc digi-pak compilation that literally doubles the classic metal dosage. Along with every song on 'We Sold Our Soul...', this remastered set includes 15 more tunes by the original lineup of Ozzy Osbourne, Tony Iommi, Geezer Butler, and Bill Ward. The finest of these additions include the previously U.K.-only track "Evil Woman," the epic stomps "Into the Void" and "Lord of This World," the thunderous "Supernaut," and the driving title track. Symptom also features "Warning" and the string-laden instrumental "Laguna Sunrise" from the initial two-LP version of 'We Sold Our Soul...', as well as four tracks from Sabbath's oft-maligned late-1970s albums. The result is an outstanding overview of Ozzy's years with Sabbath, showcasing how his distinctive vocals meshed with Iommi's formidable riffs, Butler's rumbling bass, and Ward's spot-on drums to create music that is unendingly influential.

They hit it big on their own with the 1963 smash "Green Onions". These two discs showcase 30 songs of swirling organ, tasty guitar, and a fat rhythm section that formed the foundation of soul. $20

JAMES BROWN:
20 All Time Greatest Hits! PolyGram/Polydor. This is, essentially, a pared-down budget version of 'STAR TIME', the definitive 4-CD James Brown box also released in 1991, and no finer single disc Brown greatest-hits album exists. Obviously, '20 ALL TIME GREATEST HITS!' doesn't include everything of note that the Godfather of Soul recorded, but it certainly hits all the high points, from gritty '50s R&B ("Please Please Please") to '60s soul hits ("Think," "Night Train," "It's a Man's World") to his underrated soundtrack work ("The Payback") to the funk explosions ("Super Bad," "Hot Pants," "Mother Popcorn") that are probably Brown's most lasting contribution to 20th century pop. $14

|
|
THE PAUL BUTTERFIELD BLUES BAND:
The Original Lost Elektra Sessions. U.S. Rhino/Elektra. 19 tracks. The songs here, recorded in late 1964 before keyboardist Mark Naftalin joined up, were intended for the Butterfield Band's first album. However, they were junked at the last minute by producer Paul Rothchild, who felt they weren't technically up to snuff for reasons that remain unclear despite his liner note reminiscences. The tapes then proceeded to languish in Elektra's vaults for 30 years, at which point Rothchild dug them out and decided they were better than he remembered. And a good thing, too, because they capture the band raw and in its prime with no apologies necessary. The repertoire overlaps only slightly with the "official" first album (which was recorded a few months later), and musically it's apples and oranges as to which one is better, although some prefer this recording's in-your-face style.

MILES DAVIS:
Agharta. U.S. Columbia Legacy. 2CD. Although Miles Davis's health was quite weak at the time of this two-CD set (recorded the same day as the album 'Pangaea'), he has a few strong trumpet solos on these five lengthy pieces. Just after these concerts, Miles would go into an almost six year hiatus from music. The music here is stunning with the dense ensembles and heated solos (Sonny Fortune on soprano, alto, and flute and the guitars of Pete Cosey and Reggie Lucas) being quite boisterous, but very powerful. 'Agharta' (along with 'Pangaea') is one of the finest recordings from the least-understood period of Davis's career (1971-1975). $20

The Transfiguration Of Blind Joe Death. U.K. Ace/Fantasy/Takoma. 15 tracks. This album, originally released on Riverboat Records and later reissued by Fahey's own Takoma label in 1965, has a lot of rough edges in terms of the recording but a tremendous amount of power when it comes to the music. Fahey was at the top of his game, alternately playful and dark, so there's never a dull moment. There is always something new to be heard on each playing. $16

SHARON JONES AND THE DAP-KINGS:
Dap-Dippin' with... Sharon Jones And The Dap-Kings. U.S. Daptone Records. 10 tracks. Brothers and Sisters, it's time to put aside that record you've been trying to get down with and get down with this! Sharon Jones and the Dap-Kings are
about to turn you on to their New Brand of Dynamite Soul. As the top featured act in the Daptone Funk & Soul Revue, Sharon Jones has earned a reputation as the Baddest Soul Sister on the circuit, electrifying audiences from coast to coast with her Funky Dynamic Soul Energy. I mean she comes on Strong and Funky! The first single "Got A Thing On My Mind" was an
overnight smash hit on dance floors and radio stations across the nation, and with exciting new rhythms and dances like the "Dap Dip", this record is destined to do the same. Sharon Jones, Sharon Jones. This sister is B-A-D! $15

SHARON JONES AND THE DAP-KINGS:
Naturally. U.S. Daptone Records. 10 tracks. In a desert of computerized over-produced faux-R&B, Sharon Jones & the Dap-Kings' 'Naturally' is a cool glass of water for anyone thirsty for Real Soul and Funk Music. On this, their sophomore release on Brooklyn's own independent Daptone Records, they have succeeded in transcending the boundaries of time to bring us face to face with the naked body of vintage Soul. $15
|
|
SHARON JONES & THE DAP-KINGS:
100 Days, 100 Nights. U.S. Daptone Records. 10 track enhanced digi-pak edition. Despite beginning her career in her 40s, Brooklyn-based singer Sharon Jones has been bringing true biscuits 'n gravy soul to the table as if she's been doing it since the day she was born. On her third album for the Daptone label Jones, who's backed here by label house band the Dap-Kings, rips through a set of deep '60s-inspired funk and R&B that sounds anachronistic in all the right ways. Jones and her band deliver their sermon completely unfettered by contemporary hip-hop production or commercially suitable digital gloss. Yet this isn't some clever simulation for nostalgists only; rather, Jones's muscular voice and aching delivery, and the Dap-Kings' skill and obvious love, prove the longevity and viability of vintage soul. "[With] some of the finest horn charts ever created for soul music -- funky, jazzy, subtly voiced things that compare to Pee Wee Ellis' trickiest writing for James Brown."

BOB MARLEY & THE WAILERS:
Burnin'. U.K. Universal/Island Records. Re-mastered reissue of the band's second LP for Island Records originally released in 1973 with the addition of 3 bonus tracks. 'Burnin' features a number of tunes from the early Wailers' catalogue re-recorded for these sessions, including "Put It On", "Small Axe", and "Duppy Conqueror." This material holds up remarkably well, and fits into the context of the album without a hitch. "Burnin' and Lootin'", is another highlight, and adds to the tense, revolutionary feel of the set. The musicianship here is superior, with contributions from Peter Tosh and Bunny Wailer standing out, but this was to be the last album with the original line-up before Tosh and Wailer left for solo careers.
$14
|
|
BOB MARLEY & THE WAILERS:
Natty Dread. U.K. Universal/Island Records. Re-mastered reissue of the band's classic third LP for Island originally released in 1974 with the addition of 1 bonus track. Out on his own following the defection of Bunny Wailer and Peter Tosh, this album saw Marley utilizing the talents of the I-Threes for the first time. There was still a nod to his past in the inclusion of a cover version of a Wailers tune, "Lively Up Yourself", but elsewhere he revelled in his new found freedom, on "Revolution" and most particularly, "No Woman, No Cry", which has practically become a Jamaican national anthem since its release. If that song had an instantly universal appeal, Rasta themes were also brilliantly conveyed via "Them Belly Full (But We Hungry)" and "Rebel Music (Three O'Clock Roadblock)." Marley had announced himself as one of the greats of modern music.
$14
|
|
BOB MARLEY & THE WAILERS:
Babylon By Bus. U.S. Universal/Island. 13 tracks. Bob Marley's second live album, 1978's 'Babylon by Bus', had to be pretty damned good to match the incandescence of 1975's 'Live!'. But with glorious performances on songs like "Punky Reggae Party", "Jamming", and "Is This Love?" Bob Marley and the Wailers came close to equaling 'Live!'. The Wailers had matured into a tight unit, and Marley was a charismatic performer, as this set captured only too well. And with Marley still at the height of his writing powers, there definitely wasn't a dud song in the bunch. Not so much bus travel as limousine listening, this specially remastered edition makes the glory of the original release even clearer. $18
|
|
BOB MARLEY & THE WAILERS:
Survival. U.K. Universal/Island Records. Bob Marley And The Wailers' seventh studio album finds the masterful Jamaican singer turning his attentions away from purely domestic Caribbean matters to the African continent. His songs had previously often cited Africa as both an influence and a final spiritual destination for Rastafarians; Rastaman Vibration's "War" had even named a laundry list of aggrieved nations struggling for freedom. But with Survival's "Africa Unite", and "Zimbabwe" in particular, Marley focuses for the first time both on solutions to the struggle, and on a specific nation and its fight against oppression, all to the Wailers' characteristically irrepressible skank. Includes the bonus track, "Ride Natty Ride" 12" mix. $14

|
ROBERT MITCHUM:
Calypso - Is Like So... U.S. Scamp Records. This long out-of-print 1957 gem is a must-have for any swinging bachelor or bachelorette! If there was ever a celebrity whose reputation as one of Hollywood's hippest cats was solid enough that they could risk ridicule by adopting a faux-Trinidadian accent for a novelty record, it was Robert Mitchum. The result is 'CALYPSO IS LIKE SO...', a collection of 12 Trinidadian tunes, some already made famous by Harry Belafonte, as well as some less well-known songs brought to the studio by Mitchum. Also included on the reissue as bonus tracks are "The Ballad of Thunder Road," the theme from the Mitchum flick, and its B-side, "My Honey's Lovin' Arms." Mitchum retains a dignified cool throughout the album, despite the kitsch subject matter of songs such as "Mama, Looka Boo-Boo", and "I Learn a Merengue, Mama." The album is equal parts Beat and Belafonte. In true Mitchum style, there is also a fair amount of risque material here, and this raunchy edge is perhaps what gives its staying power. $16

THE JOHNNY OTIS SHOW/SNATCH AND THE POONTANGS:
Cold Shot / Snatch And The Poontangs. U.K. Ace Records. 20 tracks. These two albums, first released in 1968 & 1969 following Johnny Otis's massive R&B hit "Country Girl", feature the saxophone line-up of veterans Preston Love and Clifford Solomon mixed with newer additions to the party such as Delmar "Mighty Mouth" Evans and Johnny's 15 year old (in 1968) son Shuggie. The latter, who has become something of a cult hero with the funk crowd in recent years, had his blistering guitar work featured on these recordings for the first time. Although the two records themselves are musically very uniform, mixing blues with funk, Snatch is very different, indicated by its cartoon cover, the X suffix on its catalogue number and the lyrical content. For many these can seem puerile, sexist and/or plain offensive. The language is possibly some of the worst that has ever been put to record, yet the imagery is often inventive and humorous. However, what justifies this record's place in history is that it is the most accurate use of the African-American art of "the dozens" that has been put to record. "The dozens" are basically rhyming insults, and whilst some have been turned into hit records, most notably by Shirley Ellis on "The Clapping Song", Rufus Thomas on "Walking The Dog" and by various people on "Iko Iko", the real street versions are far too filthy to pass muster. On 'Snatch and The Poontangs', Otis' band commit classics street routines such as "Signifyin' Monkey" and "The Great Stack-A-Lee" to wax while creating a few of their own. Includes 2 bonus tracks. $25

DON RALKE:
The Savage And The Sensuous. U.K. Harkit Records. 17 tracks. Don who? Donald E. Ralke worked in the music system in Los Angeles in the 1950's with small labels as a procurer of musicians and arranger initially for small indie labels. He later became a house arranger for Warner Bros. where he produced recordings with the stars of "77 Sunset Strip" and this album features the very 'Best Of The Best" rhythm and percussion-meisters of the day. The recording's original release in 1960 itself had, at the time, a serious intent as well, as these were early days for stereophonic recordings and Warners' aim was to demonstrate their recording capabilities to a winder public. The sound on these recordings (now, for the first time in a brilliant digital transfer) is absolutely astonishing and is still a test for the most demanding audiophile and his sound system! The meaning of the musical genre - that of 'Exotica' has today lost much of its impact, but it has its roots in the fascination Americans had for all things at the end of the fifties African and, at the same time, Caribbean and South American. Mixing it all up into an acceptable fusion style, Ralke proved he was a worthy challenger in conveying the musical illusion of steamy forests and strange ritual as you will hear! Notes by Darrell Brogden of Kansas University's nationally syndicated radio programme 'The Retro Cocktail Hour' accompany the CD in a deluxe presentation. The track "Headhunter" is a great club favourite. Includes 3 bonus tracks featuring Buddy collette. $25

SMOKEY ROBINSON & THE MIRACLES:
The Ultimate Collection. U.S. PolyGram/Motown. Smokey Robinson and the Miracles' 25 track disc is the single most impressive one of Motown's Ultimate Collection series (which features 17 artists). Combining Smokey's endlessly inventive twists on romance (good and bad) with the Miracles' handful of straight-up party hits, it showcases one of American pop's most sure-footed and touching acts. The frontman's prowess as singer, writer, and producer lights up each of these single mixes; less-celebrated tracks like "My Girl Has Gone," "(You Can) Depend on Me," and "The Love I Saw In You Was Just a Mirage" stand as tall as the many oldies-radio staples featured here. Robinson and his collaborators, both in and out of the group, regularly injected undeniable emotion into their creamy constructions, making for a stack of tracks that remain as relevant as the contemporary creations of fans Lennon-McCartney and Bob Dylan. $14

IRMA THOMAS:
Sweet Soul Queen Of New Orleans: The Irma Thomas Collection. U.S. Razor & Tie. 23 tracks. Irma Thomas was the first lady of R&B in the Crescent City throughout the 1960s. With a voice that rang out clear and strong and was full of feeling, she cranked out a long stream of soul classics for the Minit and Imperial labels during that decade, tunes that became benchmarks for a generation of rockers as well as R&B artists. It's surely her majestic delivery of "Time Is On My Side", for instance, that moved the Rolling Stones to record the song. Backed by Allen Toussaint and a host of other top-flight New Orleans session men, Thomas spins out accounts of romantic triumph and travail with equal aplomb. From the yearning, devotional ballad "Ruler of My Heart", with its plaintive cry for love, to the triumph over heartbreak detailed in "I Done Got Over It", Thomas brings a commitment to her material that is as uncompromising as it is entrancing, and it's all captured on this definitive collection.

SONNY BOY WILLIAMSON:
His Best - The Chess 50th Anniversay Collection. U.S. MCA/Chess. 20 tracks. Collects some of Sonny Boy Williamson's finest work from his tenure at Chess Records, a period widely conceded to be his most artistically fruitful. He's backed by a who's who of Chicago blues musicians, in particular the astonishingly metallic sounding two guitar team of Robert Lockwood and Luther Tucker, bassist/songwriter Willie Dixon, Muddy Waters' great pianist Otis Spann, and future Blues Brother Matt "Guitar" Murphy.
Highlights are almost too numerous to mention, but don't miss "Fattening Frogs for Snakes," which features one of Williamson's most metaphorically interesting lyrics. The great harp workout "Bye Bye Bird" has here been thoughtfully remixed for stereo.

O.V. WRIGHT:
The Soul Of O.V. Wright. U.S. MCA/Duke-Peacock. 18 tracks. Contains material recorded for the Duke-Peacock subsidiary, Back Beat, between 1964 and 1974. O.V. Wright is part of the Pantheon Of 1960s Soul, up there with Solomon Burke, Aretha Franklin, Otis Redding, Wilson Pickett and James Carr. He's not as well known but his songs have been covered by Redding, the Rolling Stones, Robert Cray, and Ann Peebles among others. His vocal style was heavily based in Southern gospel music, passionately balancing the sacred and the secular. Wright fervently implored, pleaded, and howled his tales of love lost, strayed, thwarted, or shattered. "A Nickel and a Nail" is one of the finest distillations of no-way-out desperation ever recorded. Wright affirms his love to the heavens by crying out the dramatically devotional "I'd Rather Be Blind", and "Crippled and Crazy". The music is prime Memphis rhythm & blues, full of sharp, terse guitar, rich Hammond organ, and gospel-informed background vocals, tight and funky but never slick.

Birth Of Motor Town - Rem-Embering Birth Of Soul. U.K. RPM/Shout! 24 tracks. Volume two in this series looks at the scene that provided the bedrock to Soul in Detroit. This metamorphosis of Doo Wop to Soul is epitomised by the group the Falcons who are strongly featured here. From 1955 until their split in 1963 they scored a number of hits on the R&B and then Pop charts via an evolving line up with a developing sound. Going on to solo Soul success from the Falcons were Eddie Floyd (founder of the group), Mack Rice, Wilson Pickett, and Joe Stubbs (brother of the Four Tops Levi Stubbs) who scored later as lead singer with the Contours. Also illustrating the theme are the Primettes, a girl group formed in answer to the male vocal group in Detroit called the Primes. The female version boasted Florence Ballard, Mary Wilson, Diane(a) Ross, to be renamed The Supremes. The connection between the Falcons and the Primettes is that they recorded for Lu Pine before the individuals switched to the then growing Tamla Motown group. The Lu Pine label forms the back bone to this compilation.

Features tracks by Ernestine Anderson, Theola Kilgore, The Tams, Garnet Mimms & The Enchanters, Jimmy Holiday, Gloria lynn, Jerry Butler, Ann Cole, Etta James, Marv Johnson, Little Johnny Taylor, William Bell, and a host of others. $21

Hot Women - Women Singers From The Torrid Regions Of The World (Taken From Old 78 RPM Records). Switzerland. Kein & Aber Records. Deluxe 24 tracks digi-pak edition compiled by R. Crumb. Cartoonist Robert Crumb has made no secret of his fascination with powerful women, and his equally well documented obsession with music from the first half of the 20th century has led him to not only play and record that music with his own band, but also to amass a huge collection of old 78 rpm records. This compilation is a document of both obsessions. It brings together 24 recordings, mostly from the late '20s and early '30s, of women singers from a variety of warm-climate cultures (hence the album title): Mexico, Cuba, Turkey, Tahiti, Vietnam, Algeria, Brazil, and Chile are all represented, as are many other countries and regions. Although the sound is archival quality, the music itself is an almost constant delight. Highlights include the Greek singer Rita Abadzi's "Mime Stelis Mana Anastin Ameriki" and an eerily lovely field recording of two artists named Hamsa Khalafe (voice) and Ali Atia (some kind of rattle) made somewhere in the Sahara region. This is a fascinating collection of material that would be almost impossible to hear anywhere else. Out of print.

FINNTROLL:
Ur Jordens Djup. U.K. Back On Black Records. Deluxe double LP set plus book. The raunchy bastards of the crippled folk-metal scene return with a twist. This concept album, their 4th(translates as "From the Depths of the Earth") was recorded at Sonic Pump Studios with Nino Laurenne (Ensiferum, Kiuas, Thunderstone) in Oct. 2006. Produced by Trollhorn and Tundra, this album delivers a rather unique mixture of black metal, folk music, punk and gods-know-what, ranging from epic classical symphonies into sheer merengue-inspired brutality with a hint or three of pure madness and creative songwriting. The 55 minute journey is accompanied by a lengthy booklet filled with Skrymer's original artwork and Katla's lyrics. You won't need to contact your local shaman in order to acquire mushrooms for taking this trip. $25

JOHN FOGERTY:
Revival. U.S. Concord Music/Fantasy. John's new album is a triumph, with a sound that is at once timeless yet urgently rooted in this time and place. The lyrics recall a continuous conversation with America, a reminder of John's unmatched ability to resonate with people from all walks of life. With a voice that can cut glass and inspire generations, and a band that sounds like it came to tear the roadhouse down, 'Revival' is not just a great John Fogerty album -- and a great rock album -- it's an essential musical work by an artist without peer, that will certainly stand as one of the most compelling albums of 2007. $20

SHARON JONES & THE DAP-KINGS:
100 Days, 100 Nights. U.S. Daptone Records. 10 tracks. Despite beginning her career in her 40s, Brooklyn-based singer Sharon Jones has been bringing true biscuits-&-gravy soul to the table as if she's been doing it since the day she was born. On her third album for the Daptone label, '100 DAYS, 100 NIGHTS', Jones, who's backed here by label house band the Dap-Kings, rips through a set of deep '60s-inspired funk and R&B that sounds anachronistic in all the right ways. Jones and her band deliver their sermon completely unfettered by contemporary hip-hop production or commercially suitable digital gloss. Yet this isn't some clever simulacrum for nostalgists only; rather, Jones's muscular voice and aching delivery, and the Dap-Kings' skill and obvious love, prove the longevity and viability of vintage soul. $19

THE NEW PORNOGRAPHERS:
Challengers. U.S. Matador Records. HQ-180 gram premium vinyl pressing. "Pay no attention to the reviews that imply the New Pornographers have "grown up" or "matured" or "drifted away" from the perfect-pop promise of their first three records. For if you throw darts at the songs on 'Challengers', an ambitious soundscape that had members of the all-star Canadian band recording their parts all over North America, you'll hit one flawless song after another. "All The Old Showstoppers," "All the Things That Go to Make Heaven and Earth," and "Mutiny, I Promise You" (with its driving Farfisa organ) all venture back to the infectiousness of the band's earlier records, with leader and chief songwriter A.C. Newman (now a Brooklyn native) penning some of the most thought-provoking lyrics this side of Billy Bragg. Yes, there are departures, including a string section, flute and harp, and Dan Bejar's foray into indie-pop hip-hop with the witty, New York-heavy "Myriad Harbour." But there's also Neko Case dominating the divine title track and equally charming "Go Places"" as only she can, Kathryn Calder making her lead-vocal debut on "Failsafe" and (with Newman) on the melancholy "Adventures in Solitude," and Newman using an ambitious six and a half minutes to write about his new home city ("Unguided"). Then, your 50 minutes--a dozen songs--are up, as is the conclusion: Grown up? Sure. Matured? OK. Still pop perfect? Utterly." $18

SUMMERHILL:
Lowdown. U.K. Demon/Diablo Records. Formed from the ashes of Glaswegian folk-rockers The Snakes of Shake and fronted by singer-songwriter Seori Burnett. A mere eight tracks (plus hidden bonus track at end of Side 2) in length, 'Lowdown' was a country-rock rebirth, a tonic for everyone who still pined for The Byrds and Burritos. Under the guidance of Burnett, 'Lowdown' is stuffed full with sparkling 12-strings and silken three-part harmonies, with guest star B.J. Cole adding pedal-steel flourishes here and there. Elsewhere, they dip into full-on rock ('Knew I Would Return'), taking their cue from "Eight Miles High". However, for the most part the album is made up of Summerhill's stock-in-trade, life affirming country-rock of the kind they just don't make anymore. Long out of print. $16
